Your love for your permanent makeup has not faded over time. You’re just as excited about your permanent makeup as you were when you first got it. Unfortunately, your permanent makeup has lost its luster: the once vibrant colors and contrast you cherished have now faded.

Contrary to myth, permanent makeup is not permanent. There are many factors that can cause permanent makeup to fade over time (including, but not limited to the following):

  • Exposure to the elements (e.g., sun, ocean water, etc.)
  • Applying friction (such as rubbing, scrubbing, wiping, etc.) to skin
  • Excessive sweat or perspiration (e.g., from vigorous exercise).

Even if you have managed to avoid most of the factors that lead to fading permanent makeup, it is inevitable that your permanent makeup will fade over time. Fortunately, you can take action to breathe new life into the permanent makeup that you love.

Touching Up Your Permanent Makeup

A permanent makeup touch up involves inject pigments under the skin’s surface with the goal of enhancing one’s current permanent makeup. At Blooming Beauty, there are several options for touching up the permanent makeup that you love.

Option 1: Touching Up Newly Applied Permanent Makeup. After undergoing a new permanent makeup procedure, it is normal and expected to receive scheduled touch ups. At Blooming Beauty salon:

  • Our clients who receive permanent eyebrows have a scheduled touch up at 6 weeks.
  • Our clients who receive permanent eyeliner receive a scheduled touch up at the one month mark. They will not need another touch up for 2 years.
  • Our clients who receive permanent eyeliner will need 2-3 touch ups after application because the lips are a highly vascular area (which means that the ink will not hold as well).

Option 2: Reviving Your Classic Look. You may love your original permanent makeup so much that you simply want to restore your permanent makeup to its original glory. Our artists can use ink that matches or comes close to match your original colors and “stay within the lines.”

Option 3: Making Your Permanent Makeup “Pop.” Perhaps you want to give your permanent makeup a modern update. We can use a variety of colors to provide shadow and depth to your permanent makeup and make it really “pop.”

We advocate that clients who seek permanent makeup touchups limit the frequency of touchups in a given area. Permanent makeup clients who have touch ups too often (for example, every 6 months continuously) can have unwanted scarring. Skin needs time to heal and minimal irritation to stay healthy.

Healing From Permanent Makeup Touch Ups

Because touching up your permanent makeup involves breaking the skin barrier, you must take some concrete actions to contribute to a healthy healing process. These options include the following:

  • Use your healing ointment as prescribed. This will help to prevent infections and help your skin to regenerate.
  • Use only water and non-alcoholic soap for cleansing and pat dry softly with a towel. This will allow for adequate exfoliating without irritation to your skin and damage to your permanent makeup.
  • Avoid scratching, picking at or rubbing your permanent makeup. Your skin will start to itch approximately a week after your permanent makeup touch up. If you apply friction to your permanent makeup, you can impede healing and possible open up avenues for infection.
  • Avoid exposure to factors that can increase fading. In the first month after your permanent makeup touchup, your permanent makeup is vulnerable. Sunlight, tanning booths, water, sweat, and strenuous exercise can cause your permanent makeup to fade quickly.

Also, watch your affected skin closely to monitor for signs of infection. If you have excessive bumps, redness that does not fade or pus, it is likely you have an infection. Schedule a visit with your doctor immediately if you suspect you have an infection.

In addition to these general guidelines, please take the following precautions based on your specific permanent makeup application procedure.

Permanent Eyebrows: Don’t thread, wax or dye until your eyebrows are healed.

Permanent Eyeliner: Don’t use contacts until at least 24 hours after the procedure. Use a wet Q-tip for separating stuck eyelashes. Use a Q-tip to lightly apply ointment to healing area. Don’t apply saline drops or mascara for 2 weeks after procedure.

Permanent Lip Liner: Avoid exposing lips to food and drink (through use of straws and forks). Avoid eating food that can break down permanent makeup pigments (i.e., spicy, acidic, oily, salty, and hot foods). Do not let toothpaste touch your lips. Avoid stretching out your lips (through big smiles or puckering). Use lip balm and sunscreen to protect your lips.

Most clients are able to avoid infection during the healing process if they have had the procedure performed by a highly-trained artist and have carefully followed aftercare instructions.
