Scars on your body can lower your self-esteem and confidence. Scar camouflage is a long-term solution that works on hiding the scar with tattoo treatment.

Scar camouflage and scar tattoo treatments involve a process that adds pigmentation to the scar via tattooing.

One’s importance of the appearance of one’s skin is very important, understandably. That’s why Jessica Richardson takes great pride in using prescriptive colors and the highest-quality equipment as they skillfully infuse medical pigments to blend your scar tissues with your skin.

This technique also smooths out and relaxes the texture of scars by using digital needling to generate micro-trauma to the skin. This stimulates the body’s wound-healing response, leaving your scars more even and less taut.

Covering your scar with a flesh-colored tattoo can come by many names, including scar camouflage, corrective pigment camouflage, and skin color tattooing just to name a few, but the most common term is scar camouflage.

Scar camouflage is actually considered a type of non-surgical medical procedure where a needle is inserted into the scar and deposits inks that mimic the pigment of your skin. Since skin isn’t just one solid color, the technician uses a pointillism technique to mix and match skin tones to add variety to the skin, masking the scar. Corrective pigmentation can be used on a variety of patients, including those with scars and burns, as well as on patients with skin pigmentation disorders and stretch marks.

Sadly, not all scarring can benefit from scar camouflage treatments, and you need to know this before you decide to get this procedure done, to avoid mishaps and even more scarring.

For the best results of scar camouflage:

  • Scar needs to be at least one year old
  • Scar should not show redness
  • Scar should be paler than the surrounding skin
  • Scar should not be noticeably sunken

You might have some other questions about this procedure, which is completely normal. You need to be completely informed before you decide to get this procedure done and you also need to understand your treatment plan. Here are some very often asked questions, answered.

What will happen during my consultation for Scar camouflage procedure?

Jessica Richardson will carefully analyze your scarring to see if digital-needling will benefit you. We also evaluate your natural coloring and may need to out carry out 1 or 2 microscopic ‘color-match’ tests in your scar. These test areas develop over a month giving a realistic impression of how the scar will look long-term. This ensures that the correct colors are chosen for you and the finished result is exactly what you want.

How long will treatment take?

Each treatment session takes about 1 hour, given that the size of tattoo is overall very small. Your tattoo might require a few sessions (touch ups) over the years, but that fully depends on your skin.

What will happen during my treatment?

For digital-needling, Jessica will use an electronic device to stimulate the skin’s natural healing response. With scar camouflage, Jessica will work with multiple blends of pigment to recreate the tonal variance of your skin color. This color will be matched perfectly to your skin to look as natural as possible.

Is there anything I need to know before I start my Scar camouflage treatment?

For Scar camouflage procedure to be successful, it is crucial that your skin isn’t tanned at the time of the treatment. This is because the ‘prescriptive’ skin-shade pigments need to be blended to match your natural skin color, not the fake tan color of your skin. If you are tanned when you get your procedure done, you’ll end up with a mismatch and your treated scar will look darker than the surrounding skin.

Is there anything I need to know or do after the treatment is done?

Just like for any other tattoo, it is important to keep sun exposure to a minimum once your scar has been camouflaged.

In case you are not tattoo-savvy (no judgment about that), tattoos do not like sun, because sun makes the tattoos fade away quicker, and it also makes the colors change in unpredictable way. So, you will need to keep your camouflaged scar hidden from a scar.

Will Scar camouflage procedure hurt?

It all depends on your scaring. Numbing agents should be applied if your scarring has sensation. The discomfort is often described as no more than about 2 out of 10. And of course your technician will continually check to see how you’re feeling and make sure you’re comfortable.

What kind of training does my technician have to have in order to do a good job?

In order for the tattoo to turn out pretty and to heal well, your technician needs to have an extensive portfolio of treatments. He/she also has to have a training course, which is recognized by special treatments licensing as well as VTCT and ITEC.

Will I be able to go back to work straight afterwards?

The answer to this one is: absolutely. Typically the area around your treatment may be slightly red for the first 72 hours after the procedure, but after that time window the redness will go away and you can go about your business as usual.
